    Witold Lipski

Witold Lipski (1949-1985) was an eminent Polish computer scientist, mathematician, and theoretical scientist. His short but intense scientific career encompassed fields such as database theory and algorithm analysis. During the communist era, as one of the few Polish scientists, he collaborated with recognized computer scientists from abroad, such as Christos Papadimitriou and Franco Preparata.
Throughout his career, Lipski published a series of scientific papers and authored two books: "Combinatorics for Programmers" and "Combinatorial Analysis" (co-authored with Wiktor Marek). He also supervised doctoral dissertations including those of Tomasz Imieliński (Rutgers University, USA) and Zbigniew Michalewicz (Adelaide University, Australia).
Witold Lipski passed away in 1985. In 2005, to honor his contributions to the development of computer science, the award bearing his name was established. The initiators of the Witold Lipski Award are three Polish computer scientists living abroad: Krzysztof Apt, Wiktor Marek, and Mirosław Truszczyński. The award is given annually for outstanding achievements in the field of computer science, as recognition for contributions to the advancement of this discipline.
Since 2022, the financial prize has been awarded to laureates by the Kosciuszko Foundation. In 2024, the organizer of the award is IDEAS NCBR.
